ASPCA Accepting Owned Pets in Remote Locations for Emergency Boarding

NEW YORK—In addition to establishing an emergency boarding facility in central Brooklyn for pets temporarily displaced by Hurricane Sandy, the ASPCA® (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) will accept pets at several remote locations this week for pet owners who are unable to travel to the Brooklyn facility.

ASPCA Provides $250,000 for Hay in Equine "Bale-Out" Across 19 States in Response to Vast Shortages Nationwide

NEW YORK—The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today announced that a total of $250,000 is being granted to 53 equine welfare organizations and animal control agencies across 19 states as part of its Equine 'Hay Bale-Out' grant program. The funds will provide relief for horses impacted by the high cost and low supply of hay in these drought-stricken states.

NYC Animal Planning Task Force Manages Reunification Efforts for Pets Lost during Hurricane Sandy

NEW YORK—The New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) Animal Planning Task Force, in an effort to reunite lost pets with their families, urges individuals looking for lost pets to visit Animal Care & Control of NYC (AC&C’s) lost pets website, which includes images and descriptions of pets displaced by Hurricane Sandy.

ASPCA Applauds New Federal Rule Requiring Disaster Contingency Plans

NEW YORK—The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today welcomed the new federal rule issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) requiring facilities regulated by the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) to create contingency plans for emergencies to better protect animals during disaster situations. The facilities will be expected to develop a plan detailing how they will respond to and recover from potential natural disasters and other emergencies that could affect the animals in their care.

ASPCA Urges NYC Pet Owners to Reclaim Pets at Emergency Boarding Facility in Brooklyn

NEW YORK—The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) is urging pet owners to reclaim their animals at its post-Hurricane Sandy emergency boarding facility this week as it winds down its operation. The ASPCA boarding facility was established in mid-November in the Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn to provide temporary sheltering for hundreds of animals displaced by Hurricane Sandy. As the operation disbands, the ASPCA will pursue placement options for all animals that remain unclaimed.

Rescue Work and Field Deployments

The ASPCA is a national organization that deploys when requests come in from local authorities to assist in animal cruelty cases. We help with investigations, forensic evidence collection and processing, rescuing animals and transporting them to safety, setting up temporary facilities to shelter and treat the animals, placing them with local shelters once they’re ready for adoption and providing legal services to ensure that those involved are brought to justice.
