A key principle of the ASPCA’s work to improve the lives of farm animals is a commitment to help farmers obtain technical and financial resources to improve their animals’ welfare. Agricultural subsidies and grant programs are largely set up to support conventional farming practices, leaving the more humane and responsible farmers at a severe disadvantage in the marketplace.

Farmers markets are great places to find alternatives to factory-farmed food, whether that’s fruits and vegetables or higher-welfare meat, eggs and dairy. Lots of small, local farms sell their wares to the public at farmers markets, and they typically welcome questions about how animals are raised.

Can’t find higher-welfare animal products in your favorite local supermarkets and pet food stores?
Show businesses that there’s a demand for more humanely produced food: If you don’t find welfare-certified or plant-based alternatives where you shop or eat, the best thing you can do is ask for them.
