California Becomes First State in U.S. to Ban Sale of Puppy Mill Dogs in Pet Stores

Sacramento, CALocal and national animal welfare organizations today commend California Gov. Jerry Brown for signing into law legislation that will prevent the sale of commercially raised dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores across the state of California. The law also encourages partnerships that promote the adoption of homeless pets.

ASPCA Helps to Rescue More than 100 Dogs from FL Puppy Mill

The ASPCA is on the ground in Clewiston, Florida, assisting with the removal, evidence collection, sheltering and medical care of more than 100 dogs from a substandard, unlicensed breeding facility believed to be a puppy mill. The dogs were being sold to pet stores in the Miami-Dade area. An investigation of the facility began after several complaints were made by individuals in the community, and the ASPCA stepped in to help at the request of the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office.

ASPCA Assists in Recovery of More Than 150 Dogs from Michigan Puppy Mill

Lake City, Mich.—The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) Field Investigations and Response team is assisting with the removal and sheltering of more than 150 dogs from two separate locations owned by a large, substandard, unlicensed breeding facility called JRT John's Jack Russell and Shiba Inu Kennel in Lake City, Mich.

Prudenville, Mich.—The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today announced that dogs removed from JRT John's Jack Russell and Shiba Inu Kennel in Lake City, Mich. are being placed with animal welfare groups throughout the Midwest, as well as the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center at St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in Madison, N.J.

ASPCA Launches Consumer Tool Linking Puppies Sold in Pet Stores with Licensed Inhumane Breeders

NEW YORK—The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today announced the launch of a new tool on its "No Pet Store Puppies" website that allows consumers to link pet stores that sell puppies with U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) licensed commercial dog breeders that supply puppies to pet stores around the country. 

ASPCA, Pet Airways Transfer Rescued Dogs from Mississippi Puppy Mill to New York City for Adoption

WHAT: The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ®), in collaboration with Pet Airways, is transferring 34 dogs rescued from a puppy mill in Holly Springs, Miss. to New York City for adoption.

WHEN: Sunday, February 7, 2010

WHERE:  Pet Airways Lounge at Republic Airport 1300 New Highway, Farmingdale, NY 11735 7:30 p.m.

ASPCA officials will be transferring the dogs to the ASPCA Adoption Center at 424 E. 92nd Street in Manhattan, where they are expected to arrive between 9 and 9:30 p.m. tonight.

ASPCA Field Investigation Responders on Scene in Bay Springs, Miss. to Assist in Seizure of Dogs

Bay Springs, Miss – The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®), under the authority and request of the Jasper County (Miss.) Sheriff’s Department and local animal welfare authorities, has dispatched its field investigations and response team to assist in the removal of nearly 50 dogs and collect evidence in the investigation of a Bay Springs breeder.

The ASPCA is also working with local authorities to establish a temporary shelter for the dogs, which include Chihuahuas, Shih Tzus, cocker spaniels, basset hounds, and other breeds.
