A Bright New Day for Senior Cat Nocturne

In July 2025, a senior cat named Nocturne came to the ASPCA Adoption Center through our longstanding partnership with Animal Care Centers of NYC. Though Nocturne was wonderfully friendly and sweet, she needed some medical attention, which the ASPCA was able to provide.

Over the next month, 15-year-old Nocturne received the care she needed, as well as plenty of love and attention. She was diagnosed with early signs of chronic kidney disease and was prescribed a special diet to help slow the progression of the disease. She was also given a dental procedure, in which nine teeth were extracted.

After she was cleared medically, Nocturne went to a foster home, where she enjoyed all of the benefits of home living while she waited to meet the right adopter. Unfortunately, older cats like her often take some time to find their ideal match. Nocturne remained in foster care until the end of the year, when a special person finally saw her profile on the ASPCA website.

Falling in Love Again

Last fall, Olivia D. lost her beloved cat, Inks, who she had adopted eight years ago from the ASPCA Adoption Center.

“I wasn’t sure when I’d be ready to adopt again,” Olivia says. “The apartment felt so noticeably quiet without him there.”

Her grief for Inks was heavy, but thankfully she had the support of her loved ones as well as counseling resources through her veterinarian’s office. Over time, she realized how much she missed the everyday companionship and routines of being a pet parent. She knew that she would always miss Inks, but she felt compelled to open her home and heart again to another animal in need.

Olivia decided to browse the Adoption Center’s website and was immediately drawn to Nocturne’s profile, as she looks strikingly similar to Inks. Her profile described her as a gentle senior who adores pets and cuddles, and it immediately made Olivia smile.

“Senior cats often wait the longest to find a forever home, and I couldn’t stop thinking about her until I finally submitted my adoption application,” Olivia says.

As Olivia moved further through the adoption process, it became clear how memorable Nocturne was to everyone who had met her. They were first introduced to each other over a Zoom call with Nocturne’s foster caregiver. Her friendliness and energetic chatter had everyone on the call laughing!

“It didn’t feel like I was meeting a frail older cat,” says Olivia. “It felt more like being introduced to a very self-assured kitty companion who still had plenty of life and love left to share.”

A New Home

Nocturne’s adoption was finalized in early January, and she was soon on her way to her new home. At first, she was understandably cautious about her new surroundings, but she was never shy to seek out Olivia for reassurance. Within the first hour of arriving, Nocturne was rubbing against her legs and gently nudging her hand for pets.

Nocturne, or Nox for short, is now happily settled in, and Olivia has loved getting to know her full personality. She has made it clear that cuddle time is non-negotiable!

“If I stop petting her too soon, she is persistent with headbutts and unwavering chatter to remind me she hasn’t had enough attention yet,” Olivia says.

Olivia was aware that adopting a senior cat can come with some additional responsibilities, but Nocturne’s health and care needs have been very manageable. Throughout her transition into her new home, she hasn’t had any trouble eating her special diet or using the litter box.

Nocturne’s physical health is also quite strong, though she does need some assistance jumping up and down from the bed. To help her out, Olivia picked up a small footstool for her.

“She took to it immediately and now uses it confidently to climb up for bedtime cuddles. It’s a simple accommodation that allows her to maintain full independence and comfort,” Olivia says.

Nocturne has proven to be an adaptable and tenacious cat, so now Olivia’s focus is on maintaining her good health for as long as possible.

Enjoying Life to the Fullest

Adopting Nocturne has been a very rewarding experience for Olivia. She has been reminded of the powerful feeling of gaining the trust and affection of an adopted pet. Nocturne has grown more confident and comfortable around her, which has been special to her.

“Nocturne also totally totally reshaped how I think about older pets,” Olivia says. “She’s shown me that senior animals can be surprisingly playful and affectionate at any age or stage of their lives.”

These days, Nocturne brings a steady, calming energy to Olivia’s home.

“Whenever she’s tucked in purring next to me or nudges my hand for more head scratches, Nocturne makes even small moments feel intentional,” Olivia says.

They have been learning more about each other every day, and Olivia is thankful to have found such a sweet cat to share her home with.

For anyone considering pet adoption, Olivia’s advice is to keep your heart open to older animals during your search. Seniors shouldn’t be overlooked, as they have so much love left to give, and yet they are often just waiting for someone to notice them.

“The cat who isn’t jumping up at the kennel door may be the one who will quietly transform your life,” Olivia says.
