1000th kitten

Last week, the ASPCA Kitten Nursery celebrated a very important milestone after welcoming a two-month-old kitten, Frodo, into their care in late August. Frodo’s arrival was a special moment for the staff at the Kitten Nursery, as he was the 1,000th kitten to come through the Nursery this season.

Kitten season is the time of year between the start of spring and the end of summer when more kitten litters are born. As a result, shelters, including the ASPCA, are flooded with an influx of homeless and newborn cats. The Kitten Nursery specifically focuses on the care of neonatal kittens, providing them with round-the-clock care at their most vulnerable stages, until they are strong enough to be put up for adoption.

This well-deserved celebration comes on the heels of an exciting and hard-worked season of caring for some of the ASPCA’s tiniest residents. “As our 1000th Kitten Nursery cat of the season, Frodo represents not only the amazing number of vulnerable kittens we take in, but also the deep care and expertise we apply to save their lives and care for them until they’re ready for adoption,” said ASPCA President and CEO Matt Bershadker.

Frodo and his “roommates,” York and Gorgeous, attended the party along with many of the ASPCA Adoption Center’s staff and volunteers and ASPCA partners. The celebration included a speech from the managers and senior managers, 1,000 pieces of candy to commemorate Frodo, goody bags for everyone, cake and even a photo booth so everyone could take a picture of the little guy.

Since the kitten nursery opened in 2014, a total of 3,558 kittens have gotten a chance at a brighter future thanks to the care they received here. Next season will surely prove to be another busy and rewarding time, as the ASPCA Kitten Nursery comes to the aid of kittens in need.
