Charcoal

Charcoal is a sweet, silly little guy who may need some time to show you just how much personality he has. This handsome boy is curious, shy and incredibly resilient. New situations can feel like a lot at first, but once Charcoal has time to settle in, he keeps surprising us with how quickly he bounces back and how much more confident he becomes.

Charcoal’s foster saw this transformation firsthand. When he first arrived, he spent the first few days hiding whenever his foster entered the room. He was understandably nervous and mostly kept to himself, though he was eating, using his litter box and settling into his new routine right from the start. After about a week, he discovered that nighttime was a pretty great time for playing, and before long, his foster started seeing his silly side come out.

Now, Charcoal has a nightly routine of bouncing around and playing with ping pong balls and spring toys. He loves lounging in a cozy blanket or curling up in a box, and every so often, his little tongue makes an adorable appearance.

As Charcoal has grown more comfortable, he has started leaning into pets and then bouncing playfully around his foster. He enjoys being near his person and seems to love watching the everyday happenings around the house. He'll even make his way over for attention, though he's still learning that hands are friends. He's not quite ready to be picked up or handled extensively, so he'll do best with someone who is happy to let him build trust at his own pace.

Charcoal also has a wonderfully goofy nighttime habit — if your toes happen to peek out from under the blankets, he may decide they're fair game for a tiny nibble! Consider yourself warned.

Charcoal has lived with a dog and has handled their presence calmly. He is watchful when the dog gets too close and will simply move away when he needs some space. He has never hissed or swatted at the dog, and he seems perfectly content to coexist when given the opportunity to choose his own distance. His foster also believes he could benefit from living with another friendly, social cat who could help show him the ropes and give him some feline companionship.

Charcoal does best in a quiet environment where he has places to decompress and isn't expected to become an instant social butterfly. He may hide when new people visit or when there is too much activity happening at once, but he's making progress every day. His foster has watched him go from hiding for days to actively seeking pets and engaging in playful antics in just a few weeks. While in our care, once he was comfortable, he was social with everyone who entered his kennel, which gives us another glimpse of the confident cat he's becoming.

Charcoal is looking for someone who understands that the best relationships take a little time. Give him a peaceful home, a few cozy hiding spots, some fun toys and the patience to let him come to you, and you'll get to watch this shy little guy blossom into his silly, affectionate self.
