ASPCA Cautiously Eases Alert on Acetaminophen-tainted Pet Food

NEW YORK, June 15, 2007—Based on news reports that the
U. S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) regards widespread contamination of pet food with acetaminophen to be unlikely, the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) believes that pet parents can ease their guard somewhat against another mass pet food recall related to this issue. However, the organization today reiterated that vigilance is the key to keeping their pets safe and healthy—coupled with a strong dose of common sense.

ASPCA® Expert to Appear at Panel on Pet Behavior

NEW YORK—The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today announced that Dr. Steven Zawistowski, CAAB, Science Advisor for the ASPCA, will participate in an upcoming panel “Topics on Pet Behavior” to be presented on Friday, July 23 by the Interdisciplinary Forum of Applied Animal Behavior & Premier Pet Products, Inc.

ASPCA Advises Pet Parents to Pause Before Cooking Up a Storm

NEW YORK, April 4, 2007—As investigations into several aspects of the recent pet food recall continue—including any link between melamine, the toxin identified in the contaminated foods, and renal failure in pets, especially cats—the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) has received several inquiries from concerned pet parents regarding the safety of homemade diets for their pets.

ASPCA Alerts Consumers About Blue Buffalo Pet Food Recall

NEW YORK—The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) was notified today about a voluntary pet food recall issued by The Blue Buffalo Company.  The affected products include Wilderness Chicken Dog food, Basics Salmon Dog food and Large Breed Adult Dog products. Recent reports have indicated that these recipes may contain higher levels of Vitamin D, which can cause hypercalcemia, a serious, if not fatal illness in dogs.

ASPCA Joins TD Bank and New York Public Library Branches to Provide Affordable Pet Health Services in November

Breaking News From FDA Confirms ASPCA's Suspicions on Pet Food Toxin

NEW YORK, March 30, 2007— Three days ago, the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) cautioned that aminopterin was an unlikely suspect in the illnesses and deaths of animals that ingested the recently-recalled contaminated foods—a suspicion that was today confirmed by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

ASPCA Advises Caution As Pet Food Recall Crisis Grows

NEW YORK, March 27, 2007—Since Menu Foods announced its massive pet food recall on March 16, the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) has been flooded with calls from concerned pet parents and animal welfare professionals alike. Call volume at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC), which is based in its Midwest Office in Urbana, Ill., has increased significantly over the past 10 days—approximately 14 percent—and the ASPCA’s veterinary toxicologists have been carefully analyzing data from these calls.
