How One Family Doubled The Rescue Effect’s Impact

In August 2025, Zoey, a gray-and-white pit bull, arrived at the Darlington County Humane Society in Hartsville, South Carolina, her future uncertain. Abandoned by her previous owner and diagnosed with heartworm disease, she faced obstacles that frequently cause shelter dogs to wait weeks, months and even years for a new home.

That same month, the humane society joined The Rescue Effect, the ASPCA’s national campaign dedicated to helping animals find loving homes.

Despite her affectionate nature and easygoing friendships with other dogs, Zoey struggled to catch the attention of adopters. Many looked past her, intimidated by her diagnosis. That changed when Alicia S. and Thomas K. met Zoey in May 2026, nearly 10 months after her arrival at the shelter. The couple looked past her illness and decided to adopt her.

“Zoey’s adoption was especially meaningful because she was with us for so long and had become a favorite among the staff, volunteers and community supporters who followed her journey,” says Autumn Fowler, executive director for Darlington County Humane Society. “When Alicia and Thomas met Zoey, they saw a dog who deserved a chance.”

That chance changed everything.

Today, Zoey is heartworm-free and exactly where she belongs: safe and cherished in a home of her own. She quickly settled into her cozy new life and received the veterinary treatment she needed. Whether she’s racing across the yard, playing with her favorite toys or curled up beside Alicia, Zoey is thriving.

But her story isn’t the only one transformed by Alicia and Thomas’ compassion.

When Zoey was adopted, the couple was fostering a dog named Buffy from the same organization. Buffy suffered from seizures, and her future was also uncertain. Through every challenge, Alicia and Thomas remained patient and committed, and Buffy thrived in her foster home.

As the months passed, the couple began preparations to move across the country and realized their foster period was coming to an end. They didn’t want to let Buffy go; their home had become hers, and Buffy and Zoey were now friends. Alicia and Thomas excitedly adopted Buffy in July, and it was official: They would all be starting a new chapter together in a new state: Montana.

Today, both dogs enjoy having two acres of room to run, explore and enjoy the life every shelter dog deserves.

“Buffy and Zoey’s journeys are a beautiful reminder that The Rescue Effect doesn't always stop with one animal,” Autumn says. “Alicia and Thomas’ decision to foster gave Buffy the stability she needed during a difficult time. That same experience opened their hearts to Zoey. Today, two shelter dogs who once faced uncertain futures are on an adventure together because one family chose to say yes — not once, but twice.”
