  • Nearly 7 in 10 Americans report not knowing where to find more humanely raised meat, eggs and dairy locally.
  • The ASPCA has just launched ShopKindTM, a free, online tool that shows users where they can find food from farms that raise animals more humanely, without common factory farming practices, which are cruel but pervasive.
  • Beyond a shopping tool, ASPCA ShopKind is a platform that helps drive change for animals in the food system.

Ten years ago, the ASPCA launched Shop With Your Heart to help people support improved farm animal welfare standards by shopping for food that aligns with their values. For the past decade, millions of shoppers have used our resources to understand food labels and find animal welfare-certified brands and farms. Today, the ASPCA is making it even easier for consumers who care about farm animal welfare by launching ASPCA ShopKind. This free, online tool replaces the Shop With Your Heart program and tells users exactly where they can purchase meat, eggs and dairy from certified farms raising animals without using inhumane factory farming practices.

ASPCA ShopKind was designed to solve a common problem among shoppers: according to a 2026 national survey, nearly 7 in 10 Americans don’t know where to find more humanely raised meat, eggs and dairy locally.

Only 1 in 10 Americans are confident about which food labels indicate more humane treatment.

ASPCA ShopKind was built around an interactive nationwide map of farms and stores that sell meat, egg, dairy and pet food products, as well as online delivery options, that are verified by an independent certification. Shoppers seeking better food can now find options no matter where they live.

Better for Animals … and Farmers, Too

Choosing foods listed on ASPCA ShopKind is not just a way to help protect farm animals from cruelty; it’s also a way for Americans to support the farmers who raise these animals — farmers who have made a commitment to reject harmful factory farming and raise animals with respect.

Independent, pasture-based farms struggle to compete in a marketplace flooded with factory farmed food. With ShopKind, the ASPCA is helping sustain and promote these farmers and food brands that care about animal welfare and are working for a better food system.

ASPCA ShopKind: The Only Place To Find a Map of Better-Hatched Eggs, Healthier Chicken and Pet Food

ASPCA ShopKind is the first tool that helps shoppers locate products from brands and farms pioneering certain better welfare practices.

First, ASPCA ShopKind includes a national map of better-hatched eggs — eggs produced without the standard industry practice of killing male chicks shortly after they hatch. According to 2026 national survey data, 86% of U.S. shoppers want their supermarket to offer a selection of eggs that includes options produced without killing male chicks. ASPCA ShopKind is a dynamic tool, which means stores and locations with better-hatched eggs will be added as new brands using these better-hatching practices become available regionally and nationwide.

Second, ASPCA ShopKind only lists chicken products from farms and brands that raise healthier chicken breeds that do not suffer from altered genetics. Most of the 9 billion chickens raised for meat in the U.S. each year are a Cornish Cross breed that has been bred selectively over decades to grow rapidly and disproportionately, resulting in high rates of illness, injury and chronic lameness. Not all animal welfare certification programs require their certified farms or brands to raise better breeds, even though a 2026 national survey found that 81% of Americans believe animal welfare certifications should make this a requirement.

Finally, ASPCA ShopKind includes a map of stores carrying more humane pet food and treats. This builds on the ASPCA’s Pet Food Progress Initiative, which assists pet food and pet treat brands interested in using their purchasing power to support higher-welfare farms. Pet owners can now find local sources of welfare-certified pet foods and treats, as well as a list of online options that offer delivery.

How ASPCA ShopKind Supports the ASPCA’s Vision for a More Humane Food System

ASPCA ShopKind is more than a shopping tool: it is a platform that helps consumers drive change for animals in the food system. Today, more than 95% of meat, eggs and dairy in the U.S. is from factory farms. And just a fraction of our food comes from farms raising animals on pasture, and those farms need consumers’ support to survive. The reality is there aren't enough welfare-certified, pasture-based products on the market to meet the growing demand. We're working with farmers, brands and policymakers to change that by offering grants to farms to become welfare-certified, advocating for government funding and competitive markets for more humane farms and helping to pass bans on some of the cruelest factory farming practices.

Americans agree that animals deserve to feel the sun on their backs and grass under their feet — but currently, nearly 10 billion animals are slaughtered annually in the U.S., and there is not enough land to raise all of them on pasture. This figure is simply unsustainable and will eventually have to shrink, which is why the ASPCA encourages consumers who eat animal products to embrace a plant- and pasture-based diet.
