Celebrate Adopt a Shelter Dog Month Wherever You Are!
It’s October, which means that fall is in full swing and we can count on all things being extra cozy and probably a little pumpkin spiced. But there’s another key marker to the fall season, and that’s Adopt a Shelter Dog Month!
During the month of October every year, we take the time to celebrate our rescued canine counterparts and encourage our friends nationwide to open their hearts and their homes to a dog in need. While we want our friends everywhere to expand their furry families and adopt, that’s not the only way you can get involved this year.
Besides adopting, you could also consider becoming a foster caregiver for a large dog. Large dogs have so much love to give but are sometimes overlooked in the shelter due to concerns over strength or energy levels, and common misconceptions such as “big dogs need more space”. The reality is that all dogs, regardless of size, are individuals with their own unique personalities, needs and ideal homes.
Foster caregivers help dogs in need as they make their journeys toward loving homes by giving them lots of love and time to experience living in a home. And now, with shelters still operating at limited capacity, fosters are becoming “Adoption Ambassadors” and helping their foster pets find loving homes.
And even if you’re not ready to adopt or open your home temporarily as a foster, you can also help shelter animals by sharing adoptable animals’ profiles on your social media channels with your family and friends. Visit our friends at The Shelter Pet Project to find a shelter near you where you can get more information on adoption, fostering and everything you need to help rescue dogs in your community!
