NEW YORK--Humane Law Enforcement agents of the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) arrested Queens resident Jerry Melendez today for physically beating and critically injuring a 5-year-old male Chihuahua.

On February 10, ASPCA agents responded to a call from a veterinarian of a private hospital regarding a Chihuahua that was critically injured. The Chihuahua was admitted to the hospital by his owner where he was treated for head trauma and multiple seizures. The dog had to be euthanized due to the extent of his injuries.

The deceased dog was signed over to the ASPCA's Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital for a necropsy. Results of the necropsy revealed that the Chihuahua had sustained a fractured skull caused by blunt force impact. The dog also suffered from hemorrhage to the left eye.

Melendez, 33, was arrested by ASPCA Special Agent Debbie Ryan. He was charged with one count of aggravated animal cruelty, a felony. If convicted, he faces up to two years in prison and a $2,000 fine.
