While there are many farmers and food companies providing more humane alternatives to factory farming, it is vitally important that even those businesses with the best intentions and philosophies codify their ideals in writing. Today Emmer and Co., a West Coast-based chicken company that has long been devoted to unconventional, higher-welfare farming, did just that.

Building off its current practice of rearing slower-growing chickens on pasture, Emmer and Co.’s new policy embraces continuous improvement to animal lives and commits the company to achieving one of the independent higher-welfare certifications aligned with the ASPCA’s Shop With Your Heart program.

“Emmer and Co.’s policy underscores its true commitment to animals and to its welfare-conscious customers, and we are proud to work alongside them to build a kinder and more sustainable farming system for all,” says Nancy Roulston, Director of Corporate Engagement for Farm Animal Welfare at the ASPCA.
