Prescription Meds Top ASPCA's List of Harmful Pet Toxins for 4th Straight Year

NEW YORK--Prescription medications for humans top the list of pet toxins for the fourth year in a row, according to a new list released today by the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®).

In 2011, the ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) in Urbana, Ill. fielded more than 165,000 phone calls about pets exposed to possibly poisonous substances - and in almost 26 percent of those calls, the ASPCA aided in diagnosing and treating pets which accidentally ingested human medications, both prescribed and over-the-counter.

ASPCA Urges Pet Owners to Install Window Screens to Prevent "High-Rise Syndrome"

NEW YORK—With temperatures above normal in many parts of the country, the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) is urging all pet owners, especially those who live in multi-story residences, to place screens in their windows to prevent their pets from falling out—incidents commonly referred to as “high-rise syndrome.” Unscreened windows pose a serious danger primarily to cats, although dogs and other pets are also susceptible. These types of falls can result in serious injuries or even death.

ASPCA Returns to Joplin, Mo. to Host Low-Cost Spay/Neuter & Vaccine Clinic

NEW YORK—To mark the anniversary of the catastrophic tornado in Joplin, Mo., the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) is teaming up with Joplin Humane Society to host a low-cost spay/neuter and vaccine clinic from Friday, June 1 to Sunday, June 3 for dogs and cats of low-income pet owners from Joplin and surrounding areas. Appointments must be made in advance for the spay/neuter surgery, and the vaccine clinic is first-come, first-served from 12 noon to 3 p.m. each day.

NYC Animal Planning Task Force Urges Pet Owners to Plan Ahead in Preparation for Hurricane Sandy

NEW YORK—At the request of the New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM), animal welfare agencies in the OEM's Animal Planning Task Force urge pet owners to develop an emergency evacuation plan to keep their families and pets safe before Hurricane Sandy makes landfall in New York City.
