ASPCA Issues Urgent Advisory As Pet Food Recall Widens Contaminant Found In New Protein Supplement--Not Just Wheat Gluten--for Pet Food

NEW YORK, April 18, 2007—The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today urgently reminded pet parents that the pet food recall crisis, which started almost five weeks ago, is far from over—and, as such, pet parents need to stay alert to new developments as well as the health of their pets.

Human Meds Top ASPCA's List of Harmful Pet Toxins for 3rd Straight Year

NEW YORK--Human medications have topped the list of pet toxins for the third year in a row, according to a new list released today by the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®). In 2010, the ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) in Urbana, Ill. fielded more than 167,000 phone calls about pets exposed to possibly poisonous substances - and in almost 25 percent of those calls the ASPCA aided in diagnosing and treating pets who accidentally ingested human medications.

ASPCA Launches Second Phase of "Operation Pit"

WHO:  Healthy pit bulls and pit bull mixes between the ages of three months and six years

WHAT:  Free spay/neuter surgery, and free vaccinations and micro-chipping for all pit bulls and pit bull mixes who have the surgery. They will also receive free K9 camouflage “doggie gear,” a post-operative “honorable discharge” and other awards for completing the mission.

WHEN:  In addition to every Tuesday and Thursday, “Operation Pit” will also take place on the following Sundays: March 20, April 10, May 1.

ASPCA Announces Free Health Drive for NYC Pets at Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital

WHO/WHAT: Pet owners are invited to bring their older cats and dogs (cats over seven years, dogs over five) to the ASPCA's Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital for a free blood pressure screening. The screenings are being offered free of charge on Saturday, April 9 to commemorate the ASPCA's 145th anniversary of serving NYC's companion animals.

Put a Spring in your Pet's Step at ASPCA's Block Party in Harlem

WHO: The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinics are hosting a Block Party at the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building Plaza in Harlem on Saturday, April 16, 2011 to increase awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering New York City's furry friends. The day-long event offers free pet services for the community, along with giveaways, a special "Kids Zone", and the opportunity to speak with ASPCA experts about pet health.

Do Your Pets Wear an ID Tag? They Should.

NEW YORK--The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today released findings from a recent study on the use of ID tags by pet owners. Written by two ASPCA experts and published in the September 2011 issue of Preventative Veterinary Medicine, the study found that while 80 percent of pet owners report that they believe it is either very or extremely important for animals to wear ID tags, only 33 percent of that population report always having ID tags on their pets.
