ASPCA Help a Horse Day 2015 will take place on Sunday, April 26, and equine rescues, sanctuaries and animal shelters across the nation are gearing up to celebrate throughout the weekend of April 24-26. These groups will host open houses, education programs, spring festivals, hoe-downs, barn raisings, 5K walks and other fun-filled events. Once again, they will be vying to win one of the seven awards offered through the ASPCA Help a Horse Day Celebration Contest.
Here are three ways to participate:
Visit our event directory to find out more about Help a Horse Day celebrations happening in your area—your support is critical to the work that equine rescue groups do. Help a Horse Day is the perfect time to recognize their hard work and perseverance day in and day out, serving as safety nets for those animals who have been starved, abused or abandoned. You can attend an event, volunteer for a one-time work day or share your talents on regular basis, send a donation, sponsor a horse or purchase an item from an organization’s wish list. If you are thinking of adding an equine member of the family, please consider adopting a rescued horse or donkey.
Urge the U.S. Congress to pass a federal ban on horse slaughter. Each year, approximately 150,000 American horses are purchased and trucked to Mexico and Canada to be slaughtered for human consumption. The vast majority of these horses are in good physical condition and could go on to lead productive lives in loving homes. Horse slaughter is a cruel, predatory industry, and as long as sending American horses to slaughter for human consumption abroad remains a legal option, thousands of equines will be vulnerable at local horse auctions where kill buyers are present.
Enter our Help a Horse Day Photo Contest by sharing a photo of your favorite equine on your social media networks using the hashtag #HelpAHorseContest. Then, tell us what you love most about him or her for the chance to win a special ASPCA horse lover’s prize pack!
Get involved, and horses will thank you for it!
