Per Diem Spay/Neuter Surgeon

Job Summary:


A Per Diem Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic Surgeon holds a unique position. This as-needed position is for the trained and licensed professional with a strong work ethic and commitment to the spay/neuter mission. This DVM has the skills and work experience necessary to work independently and quickly, performing 25 – 30 surgeries per day (at a speed of a 5-7 minute cat spay) and the patience and professional attitude to be part of a team. This position requires extensive experience in surgery, the ability to work with large and/or fractious animals, and to perform calmly and professionally in the event of an emergency.

Job Responsibilities:

Perform spays and neuters and assist veterinary medical staff and other staff in the following:

  • All aspects of veterinary care (i.e., surgery, pre- and post-operative care, emergency care, restraint and treatment).
  • High volume, high quality spay/neuter surgery performing an average of 25-30 surgeries a day at high speed (i.e., 5-7-minute cat spays)
  • Diagnosis and treatment of medical problems of outpatient animals.
  • Ability to work in a high volume, fast paced mobile clinic practice visiting all five boroughs of New York City.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff including LVTs, veterinary Assistants, and management.
  • Customer service, dealing with varied public including pet owners, animal rescuers, and shelter staff.
  • Provide medical information and representation to other departments of the ASPCA, to the public and to the media.

Education and Qualifications:

  • License: NY State Department of Education
  • Degree: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
  • Background in small animal medicine
  • Must have excellent attendance record.

Experience:

  • 2+ years preferred
  • Internship preferred

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Bilingual English/Spanish fluency preferred
  • Interest in animal welfare preferred
  • Ability to maintain good working relationship with clients and staff, be a team player

Shift:

Saturday and/ or Sunday
9am - 3pm

Additional Information:

This is a per diem position for between 1 and 3 days per week. Both fixed schedule and random availability sought. Start date: April 2009.
