Assistant Counsel
Department: Legal
Division: Infrastructure
Location: New York, NY
Job Summary:
Manage legal matters related to contracts, litigation and employment; assist with corporate matters.
Job Responsibilities:
- Review, negotiate and draft various corporate contracts and other legal documents (including confidentiality agreements, consulting contracts, memoranda of understanding, etc.)
- Ensure compliance with state, federal, and local laws and internal policies
- Counsel internal clients on risk management
- Represent the organization in small litigation matters and administrative hearings
- Day-to-day counseling regarding compliance with employment and labor laws (including discrimination, harassment, wage and hour requirements)
- Educate staff on legal issues/risks facing specific areas
- Draft regular internal reports
- Liaise with outside counsel
- Other duties as assigned by Corporate Counsel
Education:
- J.D. degree from an ABA accredited U.S. law school
- Admitted to practice law in New York
Experience:
- 2-3 years of prior law firm or other comparable experience; in-house corporate experience (for-profit or nonprofit) a plus
- Experience in any of the following areas:
- Intellectual property
- Litigation
- Employment and labor law
- General corporate or nonprofit practice
Knowledge Requirements:
- Contract drafting experience
- Knowledge of relevant substantive areas of nonprofit corporate law Knowledge of animal law is not required, but a commitment to animal welfare is helpful
Skills Requirements:
- Excellent judgment and discretion, especially regarding confidential and sensitive matters
- Strong research and analysis skills
- Superior written and oral communication skills
- Ability to prioritize heavy workload and work independently with minimal supervision
Training Requirements:
- J.D. degree from an ABA accredited U.S. law school
