Senior Veterinary Assistant

Job Summary:

A Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic Senior Veterinary Assistant is an experienced professional with a strong work ethic and commitment to the spay/neuter mission. The person in this position has has excelled with general husbandry of hospitalized or shelter animals and has the patience and professional attitude to be part of a dynamic team. This position requires experience with prepping animals for surgery, providing post-operative nursing care, restraining large and/or fractious animals, and performing calmly and professionally in the event of an emergency, all while providing superior customer service to Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic clients.

Job Responsibilities:

Assist veterinary surgeon and licensed veterinary technician (LVT) in the following:

  • Successfully achieve daily goals of Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinics, following all medical and field standard operating procedures as determined by MSNC management.
  • All aspects of veterinary care (i.e., surgery prep, pre- and post-operative nursing care, emergency care and restraint) with patient comfort as a priority.
  • Animal restraint, including work with large dogs (over 70 pounds) and feral cats.
  • Provide excellent customer service to a varied public including pet owners, animal rescuers, and shelter staff in a patient and professional matter, creating and maintaining goodwill for the ASPCA and MSNC.
  • Paperwork: keeping detailed records of surgeries and other medical services performed, as well as accurately maintaining drug log records.
  • Wrapping, sterilizing, dating, and initialing packs and other surgical supplies.
  • Disinfecting and sanitizing clinic and equipment daily as instructed.
  • Maintaining and cleaning clinic and equipment daily as instructed.
  • Overseeing daily laundry duties as per clinic standard operating procedures.
  • Maintaining an open mind regarding changes, willingness to learn new techniques as protocols evolve.
  • Other duties as needed, including answering client questions, ensuring that unit is properly stocked for next day’s clinic.

Education and Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Driver’s license required, with strong driving record
  • Must have valid and clean CDL or learn to drive our 37’ mobile clinic (at ASPCA’s expense).
  • Must have excellent customer service skills and patience.
  • Must have excellent attendance record.

Experience:

  • 5 – 6 years of veterinary medical experience.

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Must speak fluent English. Bilingual English/Spanish fluency preferred
  • Interest in animal welfare preferred
  • Ability to maintain good working relationship with clients and staff, be a team player
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office and ImproMed preferred.

Skills Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.

Additional Information:

  • This is a full-time position, 10 hours per day, 4 days per week. Weekends could be required.
