The ASPCA® estimates that over 3 million cats and kittens end up in shelters each year, and now, more cats than ever are at risk due to the challenging economy. That’s why the ASPCA and the makers of Fresh Step® litter and 9Lives® cat food are teaming up this November to raise awareness for the growing number of cats displaced due to economic hardship and home foreclosure. Together we are launching the ASPCA® Cat Assistance Program, a national and grassroots effort to provide food and litter to cats across the country whose owners are in need of assistance. Our goal is to help keep cats in their loving homes, where they belong.

During the month of November, the makers of Fresh Step® litter and 9Lives® cat food are donating 20,000 free coupons and hundreds of Cat Assistance Kits to shelters in select markets for cat owners who are struggling financially. The free Cat Assistance Kits include a litter pan, litter scoop and cat toys, plus free product coupons. The kits are available to cat owners in need (one kit per household, while supplies last) at the following shelter events*:

  • ASPCA, New York, NY : November 5 National Kick-Off event
  • Humane Society of Tampa Bay, Tampa FL: November 6
  • Spokanimal C.A.R.E., Spokane, WA: November 6-8
  • Town Lake Animal Center, Austin, TX: November 7
  • Nashville Humane Association, Nashville, TN: November 14
  • East Bay SPCA, Oakland, CA: November 14
  • Sacramento SPCA, Sacramento, CA: November 14
  • Paws Chicago, Chicago, IL: November 15 (Note! Date changed)
  • Charleston Animal Society, Charleston, SC: November 7
  • Pikes Peak Pet Pantry, Colorado Springs, CO: November 21 (Note! Date changed)

Here’s What You Can Do to Help in Your Community!

  • During the month of November, purchase specially marked orange packages of Fresh Step® litter. A portion of the proceeds will go to support the ASPCA in helping cat owners in need. To participate, look for the Paw Points code on the side panel of the specially marked Fresh Step® litter packaging. Go to www.mypawpoints.com and enter the code. For each purchase represented by entering the unique Paw Points code, Fresh Step® will donate 50 cents to the ASPCA® (up to $400,000)**.

  • Conduct a food/litter drive for a shelter in your community. Here’s a downloadable flier to get you started. Customize the flier and launch your own grassroots effort where you work, in your school, at a local business or with any club you belong to. If you’re not sure what items to collect, contact your local shelter for a wish list and collect items they need to help cats in your community.

We know times are tough for everyone, including our feline friends.  Please support this program and do whatever you can to help us keep cats in their loving homes and out of shelters.
