NYC Goes Orange for Animals

This April, the ASPCA will once again commemorate Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month. From its beginnings three years ago as a small grassroots adoption event in New York City, the ASPCA’s April celebrations have mushroomed into a nationwide celebration of the human-animal bond and the organization’s victories on behalf of animals.

“We are encouraging everyone, young and old, to ‘Go Orange for Animals’ and support the ASPCA during the month of April,” says ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres. “Whether you hold a bake sale, a benefit concert, or take time to volunteer at your local animal shelter, your contribution will make a difference.”

The ASPCA will officially kick off its celebration in the Big Apple when iconic buildings and landmarks across the city, such as the Empire State Building, will light up in our signature color and “Go Orange for Animals.” On the heels—or shall we say paws—of the lightings, the ASPCA will celebrate with a fun, life-saving event:

Working hard to put an end to the tragic euthanasia and homelessness of healthy animals, the ASPCA is honoring Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month with a Pet Health Block Party in Brooklyn on Saturday, April 17.

Enjoy free refreshments and entertainment, including tunes by DJ Hard Hittin Harry, along with a full range of pet services and family-fun activities:

  • Free spay/neuter surgeries for all pets
  • Free microchipping and vaccinations
  • Free pet ID tags
  • Cats and dogs available for adoption
  • ASPCA health and behavior experts on hand to answer pet-related questions
  • Meet and greet with ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Agents
  • Special "Kids' Zone" with face painting, temporary tattoos, cotton candy and more!

Plus, don't miss our special guests, including Grammy-nominated R&B recording artist Maiysha and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, who will issue a proclamation in honor of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month.

“Last year’s celebration in Harlem was such a remarkable success that we decided this event should be celebrated every year,” says Aimee Christian, Senior Director of ASPCA Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinics. “It is extremely encouraging to see New York City residents using our spay/neuter program to further ensure their pets’ health.”

The ASPCA will have all five of our state-of-the-art mobile veterinary clinics on-site. The mobile clinics are custom-built hospitals on wheels with the capacity to spay and neuter approximately 125 animals each day.
