Henry Bergh founded the ASPCA more than 145 years ago. He fought tirelessly to bring an end to cruelty and neglect, and today we honor his work by recognizing the special group of donors who make up our Founder’s Society.
This small but dedicated group of supporters makes annual contributions of $500 or more and plays a critical role in our efforts to create a more humane future for animals nationwide.
Did you know it takes $500 to provide complete medical exams for 10 puppies or kittens? Or that it takes $2,000 to feed just 25 dogs or cats for three months? Or that transporting 50 animals from a horrible situation of abuse, or from the site of a natural disaster, can cost $5,000? Thanks to our Founders, we can be there for animals who need our help.
There are lots of benefits to joining our Founder’s Society, but what drives most of our Founders is the knowledge that as part of this dedicated group of supporters, they are leading the charge to secure a brighter tomorrow for animals in this country.

Invitation to attend exclusive briefings with our experts. Our Founders have learned firsthand what it’s like to tackle animal cruelty from Tim Rickey, our Senior Director of Field Investigations and Response; they’ve heard about our efforts to put an end to puppy mills from Cori Menkin, Senior Director of our Puppy Mills Campaign; and they’ve chatted about the ASPCA $100K Challenge with our very own Bert Troughton and last year’s Challenge winners.
Invitation to participate in our Founder's Choice Grant Contest. In 2012, we launched our first ASPCA Founders Choice Grant Contest to give our Founders a chance to get personally involved with the incredible work our Grants Team is doing. Our Founders had the opportunity to nominate a local shelter for the chance at a $5,000 grant from the ASPCA. We then invited our Founders to vote for their favorites to help three lucky groups save more lives!
Access to a Founders-only website. Here, our Founders can peruse the archives of past briefings, share stories about their pets or tell us about the work they are doing in their own communities. Founders can check out local events held by the great organizations in our Partner Communities.
