USA, Take Action: Defund in the Homestretch!

U.S. Senate Agriculture Appropriations for FY 2017
ASPCA Position:  Support language banning tax dollars for horse slaughter
Action Needed:  Please call and email your lawmakers in Washington, D.C., and urge them to support the language to continue the ban on using tax dollars for horse slaughterhouse inspections.
Update—May 19, 2016:  Great news, advocates. The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee voted in favor of the Udall-Kirk Amendment as part of the FY2017 agriculture spending bill, which will block federal tax dollars from funding inspections of horse slaughter facilities for another year. Without these inspections, the horse slaughter industry cannot resume in the United States. The House Appropriations Committee approved an identical amendment in April. The spending bill now moves to the House and Senate floors for a final vote. We need your help to make sure the slaughter defund language is retained in the final version of the bill passed by Congress—see action steps below!

You may recall that we won a major victory for horses last year when the 2016 spending bill was signed into law. The bill renewed a ban on the use of tax dollars for inspections of horse slaughterhouses, which successfully prevented the opening of horse slaughter plants in the United States. Unfortunately, this ban will expire in September and must be renewed in order to protect our nation from the cruel, unnecessary and predatory industry of horse slaughter.
The bill now moves to the Senate and House Floors for final votes, and we must make sure the language blocking funding for horse slaughter is retained in the final Appropriations bill passed by Congress.

What You Can Do

It is critical that your U.S. representative and senators hear from you today on this important issue, so please take these two simple actions right now:

1.  Please place phone calls to your U.S. representative’s and U.S. senators’ offices in Washington, D.C. If you don’t know who represents you in Congress, you can find their names and phone numbers here. Don’t  be nervous about calling—it’s easy, fast, and by far the most effective thing you can do! If you don’t know what to say, don’t worry. You can use this script when speaking with the receptionist:
“Hi, this is [your name] and I am your constituent residing in [town and state]. I’m calling today to urge Senator/Representative [your elected official’s name] to continue the ban on horse slaughter funding in the 2017 Agriculture Appropriations bill. As a horse lover, I do not want my tax dollars subsidizing horse slaughter. Thank you!”
2.  Then, send follow-up emails to your federal legislators with the same message of support. If your representative or senators are already leaders in the fight against horse slaughter, they will receive a thank-you message. (Please note that the form has two steps: After you submit your information, you will be able to view and edit our pre-drafted messages before authorizing them to send. Please remember to add your own thoughts about why you oppose horse slaughter in the boxes provided!)
On behalf of our nation’s horses, thank you! Your action is a crucial part of advancing the fight to prevent the slaughter of American horses.
