If you’ve ever imagined sharing your home with a gentle giant, then you must meet Darjeeling— all 97 lb. of him!

It’s hard to be a plus-sized fellow in NYC, especially when you’re a sensitive boy who’s missing home and feeling too scared some days to go for walks. Darjeeling, or DJ for short, has lived in a loving home since he was a young pup, where he learned basic cues such as “sit” and “down” in both English and Spanish. ASPCA staff and volunteers are working hard to make DJ comfortable in the shelter, but home is really where he wants to go.

Big fan of: Snuggling, belly rubs, snacking on apples or chicken and playing with dog friends big and small. While DJ is fond of other dogs, he is also big and strong—something he tends to forget—and may be overwhelming for some small dogs at times. DJ is a goofball and will bring you his toys for a game of tug or fetch. This guy is always up for an adventure and would love to go hiking or to the dog park and then head home to snuggle on his bed!

Things he’s working on: Since DJ lived in a quiet home, he can sometimes be nervous around new or unfamiliar things. He’s been known to bark and run away from some everyday objects, like a hat sitting on the floor! DJ is excited to explore when he gets outside for a stroll and sometimes pulls on his leash. Our Behavior staff is teaching him that the best place to be is by your side, and they can provide tips to continue his training at home so that walks are enjoyable for everyone. DJ can have sensitive skin and our team will share ways to keep him looking and feeling great.

Special features: Ask DJ to lay down and the next thing you know he’s upside down awaiting a belly rub. DJ appears to be housetrained, and with guidance and a schedule he will quickly adjust to his new home. Although he is feeling anxious in the shelter, DJ has been quick to make new friends and can regularly be caught snuggling with a staff member in his kennel or in our training room playing tug with his favorite rope toy!

Dream home: DJ seeks a family who loves the idea of a big-breed dog, are eager to help him explore his new world on his terms and will be comfortable with taking things slowly. Our team is pretty smitten with DJ and are standing by with support and tips to help him find his way home. DJ is a big fan of other dogs and would be happy to share his home with one. He has lived with children as young as 10, and wiggles in his kennel whenever kids walk by, hoping one of them will stop to say hi.

Come on in to meet DJ¬—maybe he can be home just in time for Father’s Day!
