On March 24, the ASPCA assisted the Federal Bureau of Investigation, United States Attorney’s Office and local law enforcement agencies in a federal dog fighting raid that resulted in the seizure of nearly 100 dogs from multiple properties in Missouri, Kansas and Texas.

Yesterday, at a federal court in Kansas, justice was served. Two individuals connected with last March’s raid learned that they would serve time in prison, pay large fines and perform community service for their roles in the illegal enterprise.

Pete Davis Jr., 38, was sentenced to 16 months in prison and Melvin Robinson, 42, was sentenced to 10 months after pleading guilty to charges related to dog fighting. Davis and Robinson were also ordered to perform 50 hours of community service and pay $430,919 to the ASPCA for the care of the dogs seized. Both Davis and Robinson are also banned from owning dogs for three years following their sentences.

“The ASPCA is proud to have helped secure justice for the dogs involved in this case,” says Tim Rickey, Vice President of ASPCA Field Investigations and Response. “Thanks to the persistence of the FBI, U.S. Attorney’s Office and Missouri State Highway Patrol, these individuals are finally answering for the suffering they caused these dogs. Dog fighting is a horrific crime, and we encourage the public to continue to report suspected dog fighting activities to local authorities.”

The ASPCA provided daily care, medical treatment and enrichment for the animals seized in the raid before placing the majority of the dogs with rescue groups to be made available for adoption.

10 months, 16 months. Is that all? They'll both be out of jail in less than half that time, if that. For torturing and killing animals, you get a slap on the wrist. The laws need changing.

Also...they ONLY get 3 years for not owning dogs? Is that joke? At least they should be banned for life. People like this should not have have animals NEVER.

Completely agreed. No more animals for LIFE. They cannot be trusted with them.

Animal Abuse No More

Are these people joking? 3 years of no dogs? GROW UP PEOPLE! This was a 100 dog, dog fighting crisis! And your just going to sit back and let it go? What if those dogs were your children? Would you just watch it happen and let them do it again?! I agree! These laws need to be changed, NOW

Bonnie Aubrey

I absolutely agree I wonder just how many of those dogs were stolen out of the yards of loving homes and made to fight for their lives or became bait for other dogs who really didn't want to fight but were made to?

Animal Abuse No More

It would kill me to think that my precious lab puppy would be stolen from my own backyard and forced to fight and kill other dogs! It's inhumane

Are you stupid talking about your kids where yo brain at dumb ass dogs been fighting for years where did y'all come from not this world because if you did den common sense we all know that people fight against oneanother so why not keep killing people why we kill dogs

You so very right. This was NOT justice to all of those poor suffering animals. How many years have these A**holes done this? How many days of torture did they all suffer? ONE day of starvation feels like an eternity, they did that to over 100 dogs! I am DISGUSTED at our justice system!! NEVER, they should NEVEEERRRRR be allowed to own dogs. Do sex offenders get to have kids around them after 3 years?? Yet animal cruelty offender get to have them in their possession again at some point!?!?!? GGGGRRRRRRAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! IDIOTS!!!!!!!!

WOWthe judges need to start taking this seriously.
