MaryEllen & Killian
Animal Poison Control Center since 2011
MaryEllen first met Killian in 2005. A sophomore in college at the time, she was working at the barn in St. Joseph, IL where Killian was boarded. He had been a racehorse and had participated in pony club and eventing, so MaryEllen decided to lease him.
At first she was nervous, given the responsibility of managing a horse as a student. But when his owner decided to move and offered to give Killian to MaryEllen, she couldn’t say no. “I have never regretted accepting him into my family, and he continually teaches me patience and understanding,” she says.
MaryEllen and Killian still compete together and make time for gallops around the pond. “The time I spend with him keeps me grounded, and the work we do together is a tremendous stress reliever,” says MaryEllen. “He is now 18 and acts like a six-year-old. He is a blessing in my life.”
