Kristen & Toefu
Behavior Rehabilitation since 2007
In the spring of 2010, Kristen traveled to a shelter in Knoxville, TN to evaluate 76 dogs from a hoarding case. The dogs, dubbed the “Tennessee Toehounds” because of extra digits on many of their back paws, had been living in a small, dilapidated house filled with years of accumulated filth.
At the shelter, a staff member took Kristen to see a dog that she considered particularly unique: Toefu. Kristen says, “When I took one look at Toefu, perched atop her kennelmate, mostly bald and sporting a severely undershot jaw, it was all over. I knew I wouldn’t leave Knoxville without her and her extra toes.”
Back up north, Toefu now spends her days working as a “helper dog” at the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center in New Jersey, boosting the confidence of fearful, undersocialized dogs from similar backgrounds as they take their first steps on the road to recovery. “Toefu seems to celebrate every day,” says Kristen. “Her zest for life is contagious.”
