Four Easy Steps to Adoption

1. What You Need in Order to Adopt

Thank you for considering adopting a companion animal from the ASPCA!

Now that you feel you are ready to adopt, we want to find the right match for you. You are about to make an important commitment that should not be rushed into. Your new pet will be with you for years, and choosing him or her is a big decision. Please check out our adoption tips for more information.

When you are ready to visit the 92nd Street ASPCA Adoption Center, please bring the following to facilitate the adoption process:

  • Two forms of identification, one with your current address on it and one picture ID (A telephone, utility or cable television bill qualifies as one form. We will also accept a driver's license, passport, or student or work ID.)
  • Two personal references, both reachable by phone
  • Proof of vaccination for current pets in your home, or your veterinary clinic's contact information
  • Proof of income
  • If you are adopting a dog, please bring in all members of your household to meet their new pet. If you already have a dog at home, please bring him or her along.

If you have any questions, please call the Adoption Desk at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120.

The ASPCA Adoption Center offers you and your new animal companion the following benefits:

  • A certificate for 14 days of  free follow-up veterinary care and medical support at the ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital
  • A leash and collar or pet carrier to help you bring your new companion animal home
  • Literature and information about animal behavior and what to expect from your new pet
  • Spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, microchipping plus registration, FeLV/FIV testing for cats and heartworm testing for dogs, all included in the adoption fee
