Bay Springs, Miss – The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®), under the authority and request of the Jasper County (Miss.) Sheriff’s Department and local animal welfare authorities, has dispatched its field investigations and response team to assist in the removal of nearly 50 dogs and collect evidence in the investigation of a Bay Springs breeder.
The ASPCA is also working with local authorities to establish a temporary shelter for the dogs, which include Chihuahuas, Shih Tzus, cocker spaniels, basset hounds, and other breeds.
Presently, at least 46 dogs have been signed over to Sally Langley, who provides animal control services to Jasper County, and is working with the ASPCA and the local sheriff’s department. Many of the dogs are dehydrated, low in body weight and several required emergency veterinary care.
“Animal cruelty is unacceptable, and we are doing everything we can to lend our support to this critical operation," said ASPCA Senior VP of Anti-Cruelty, Matt Bershadker. “This includes collecting evidence for possible prosecution of the criminal case, as well as providing for the animals’ immediate needs on-scene, such as feeding, watering and making sure all animals are checked by veterinarians.”
The ASPCA is the only national organization on the scene. Other agencies assisting in the operation include Tailwaggers for Life and Healthy Happy Pet Adoptions, both providing crates, supplies and personnel; Mississippi F.A.C.T. (Fighting Animal Cruelty Together), which is providing shelter volunteers; and the Mississippi Board of Animal Health, which is providing supplies.
