Austin TX, August 13, 2008 - It’s all about cats during the dog days of summer as the ASPCA® Mission: Orange Austin community partners Austin Humane Society, Animal Trustees of Austin, Emancipet, and Town Lake Animal Center work to improve and save the lives of cats and kittens and increase adoptions across Central Texas through several special summer community programs.

“We’re proud of our Austin partners for the continued work they’re doing to increase positive outcomes for Austin’s homeless pets,” said Karen Medicus, team leader for ASPCA Mission: Orange in Austin and the ASPCA’s Director of Shelter Resources & Communication. “Cats and kittens are especially in need of new homes this summer, and for those who can’t adopt, there is the opportunity to donate much-needed supplies.”

  • Austin Humane Society - Donation Drive

Sunday, August 17, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Austin Humane Society: MIX 94.7 FM is sponsoring a “Donation Drive” for the cats! The Austin Humane Society needs monetary donations, as well as food, blankets and toys.

Donations needed include: high quality canned cat and kitten food, towels (small to large), blankets (without stuffing), non-clumping cat litter, hard rubber toys, rubber squeaky toys, and cat toys, as well as medical supplies such as heating pads, cotton balls, digital thermometers, cotton swabs, rubbing alcohol, and closeable plastic sandwich bags.

  • Austin Humane Society - Feral Cat Spay and Neuter Program

Now through the end of August donations made to the Feral Cat Spay/Neuter Program will be matched dollar for dollar up to $15,000 (by AHS supporters Michael and Lara Gale and Kathy Girling), with the goal of spaying and neutering a record number of 5,000 feral cats in one year.

  • “Adopt a Shelter Cat” Summer

Now through August 31: Austinites are encouraged to join the Austin Humane Society and Town Lake Animal Center in their “Adopt a Shelter Cat” effort to save at least 1,500 felines this year. Through a joint program all summer cats and kittens greatly in need of homes can be united with new families. For the summer program, adoption fees have been reduced from $85 to $35 for all cats and kittens and waived for cats over the age of five.

Adoption packages for cats and kittens adopted from the Austin Humane Society and Town Lake Animal Center include:

    • Free rabies vaccination and post surgical and wellness check from a participating veterinarian
    • Vaccinations for other diseases (kittens have received their first set, but may need more)
    • General health and behavior screenings
    • Prior spay/neuter surgery
    • De-worming
    • Micro Chip
    • Staff support for questions or comments about your pet
    • A lifetime companion
    • The satisfaction of knowing you have saved a life!

Emancipet, another partner in ASPCA Mission: Orange, conducted its “Summer Love” campaign from July through the first week of August, providing nearly 250 free spay/neuter surgeries for all owned cats at its clinic on Levander Loop. Emancipet continues to offer free cat surgeries to Austin residents every Friday and Saturday, funded in part by the City of Austin. Emancipet’s regular surgery prices for cats are $29 for males and $39 for females, and financial aid is always available.

In 2007, the ASPCA entered into a partnership with target animal welfare and community organizations around the country to launch “ASPCA® Mission: Orange
— a focused effort to provide positive outcomes for at-risk pets (i.e., shelter animals) through education and the dissemination of knowledge and resources.
