Rally on the Steps of the Harrisburg, Penn. Capitol Will Support Proposed Legislation
May 13, 2008
Who:
Two ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) experts—Cori Menkin, Esq., Senior Director of Program Counsel, and Debora Bresch, Esq., Legislative Liaison—will be in Harrisburg, Penn. this Wednesday to support a press conference (held by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the Governor’s office) that will introduce two crucial pieces of legislation in the fight against puppy mills. Media interested in learning more about the subject from acknowledged experts in the field are invited to set up in-person or telephone interviews with them.
What:
The ASPCA has teamed up with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to pursue this important Pennsylvania legislative initiative, and is urging animal lovers to bring their furry friends to rally in support of two new bills. The proposed legislation aims to raise the minimum standards for kennels and improve the health, safety and welfare of all kenneled dogs. Rep.James Casorio’s proposed legislation to amend the dog law will increase cage sizes, eliminate wire-floored cages, ensure outdoor runs for exercise and 24/7 access to clean water, and require annual veterinarian exams. Dog wardens would also gain greater authority to monitor kennels and revoke licenses of sub-standard kennels. Fines and penalties would also be increased, and under Rep. Thomas Caltagirone’s proposed bill to amend the cruelty law, breeders would be required to bring dogs to licensed veterinarians for medical procedures.
When:
Wednesday, May 14 at 10:30 a.m. EDT.
Where:
The steps of the Capitol Building in Harrisburg, Penn., located at North & Commonwealth Streets in Harrisburg.
How:
To arrange interviews with ASPCA experts regarding this proposed legislation, please contact Alison Zaccone at 212-876-7700, ext. 4568, by cell (347) 578-2242 or via e-mail at alisonz@aspca.org.
