NEW YORK—The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today responded to the news that the Obama family received a 6-month old Portuguese water dog from Senator Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., who owns several dogs of the same breed.
“The ASPCA always encourages prospective pet owners to make adoption their first option and as an organization had hoped the First Family would opt for a homeless pet from a shelter or rescue group,” said ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres. “However, we believe the Obamas made a good faith effort to choose the right dog for their family and lifestyle, which has been a source of speculation for many months. Their pet was obtained from a responsible source, with the Obamas fully invested in the process. We wish them well with their new puppy, and hope that Bo will be a source of joy and love for years to come.”
