My 8-year-old Chihuahua/terrier mix has horrible breath. I feed him only dry food, clean his teeth regularly and give him Milk-Bone biscuits and rawhide. What else can I do to sweeten his breath?
If your veterinarian has not recently cleaned your dog's teeth or examined his mouth, Ronni, we would recommend a trip to the vet for an exam. Bad breath can often be caused by dental disease such as gingivitis and periodontitis, and if your dog’s breath is that bad, it’s worth checking into. However, bad breath can also be caused by issues in the gastrointestinal system or lungs, or by systemic disease. If your veterinarian examines your dog and rules out a medical cause for his bad breath, there are other steps you can take to help reduce his halitosis. Keep brushing his teeth regularly and research other treats formulated to improve breath odor. You might also want to discuss these and other home-use oral health products with your veterinarian to see if there’s a type he or she recommends.
