My Dog Eats Leaves

My dog eats leaves. Is this normal?

- Tina, age 10

It’s best to try to keep your dog away from leaves, Tina. Certain plants that are harmful to pets may be mixed in with them. It’s also important to know that when pets eat objects they shouldn't, they’re engaging in a kind of behavior called pica, and they can be taught not to do this. When you notice your dog chewing, or getting ready to chew on leaves, call her to you. When she comes, reward her with a treat. You can also give her plenty of toys to chew on and make sure she plays with them. If she still chooses to chew on leaves, you might want to talk to your parents about getting advice from an animal behavior professional or vet. If she’s eating leaves because she’s looking for a nutrient she’s lacking, your vet will be able to give you more advice about what to feed her. Good luck, Tina!
