My 14-1/2-year-old shih tzu has started drinking far more water than usual. Could this indicate a problem?

Sudden, excessive thirst can be a sign of a medical condition such as diabetes, kidney failure or liver disease, to name just a few. We would recommend a trip to the veterinarian right away, Bryan. He or she will be able to perform an examination and diagnostic tests on your dog to determine the root of this excessive thirst. Changes in urine production can also accompany excessive water consumption, so you may want to monitor how often your shih tzu goes to the bathroom and discuss your findings with your veterinarian. He’ll then be able to offer advice and find a proper treatment, if needed.
