A few months ago, two identical stray cats showed up in our backyard. After three weeks, one of them disappeared. Now he’s back, but he’s severely emaciated. I’m willing to care for him, but I don't know what the best method is. Can you help?
We would recommend a trip to the veterinarian first, Allison. The cat’s been away for awhile and you don’t know what he’s been through. It’s a good idea to give your vet a chance to look for any health problems that may be a result of his time away. As for his weight, if your cat looks thin but seems otherwise healthy, we would recommend feeding him a high-quality, nutritionally complete cat food. Your veterinarian may even recommend a prescription diet or kitten food for a period of time in order to help him gain weight more quickly. Be sure to ask your vet for more specific recommendations to address your cat’s needs.
