Buying Opened Bags of Food
-
The pet store where I get my pet food constantly has broken and taped bags. I know that when packaged people food comes in contact with oxygen the shelf life is greatly decreased. Should I buy these bags?

As with any food product, it is generally not recommended to purchase products with ripped or opened packaging. Depending on the length of time the package was open before being repaired, it could certainly dry out or go stale. Some nutrient content, such as Vitamin C, does diminish over time with any product. More importantly, however, if a package has a hole in it, it may mean that rodents or other pests have eaten through the packaging, and have come in contact with the food. This is highly unsanitary. To ensure that you are buying fresh, unopened food, examine the package prior to purchase, and select one that has not been tampered with.
