Families Deciding to Euthanize

Our vet has recommended that we consider euthanizing our beloved pug. She is fading fast, but my retired husband won't face facts. How can I persuade him? This decision is a terrible one for me, too, but I won't stand by and watch her suffer.

Wives sometimes get caught between the conflicting needs of family members. Clearly, you love this dog as a member of your family. Your husband may be equally attached, but he may be afraid of the grief he will feel.

Since your pug is already suffering, I suggest you firmly propose a compromise to your husband. For example, you both could agree to let your veterinarian decide the time for euthanasia, based on the medical reality. Once you are no longer worried about your dog's suffering, you will be more effective in repairing the rift in your marital relationship. And sharing in memorial activities for your pet will help recollect the joy you have shared because of this wonderful dog.
