Sharing a Cat with an Ex

My boyfriend of six years moved out, leaving his cat in my care. The problem is that now he wants to take her back. After six years, I’ve grown to love her as my own and I don't want to give her up. Do I have any rights in terms of keeping her with me?

I am unable to give you legal advice, Jennifer, as I am a psychologist and not a lawyer. I can tell you, though, that there are ways for you and your ex-boyfriend to negotiate a solution without a lawyer. For example, you can hire a private mediator to help you determine where your cat should live. Whatever you decide to do, I ask you to please avoid a hostile custody battle by claiming that she can only thrive in your home. Some cats can adjust well to dividing their time between two homes. As you negotiate this, just remember that you’ll create the happiest lifestyle for your cat if you commit to developing a good working relationship with your ex-boyfriend.
