Teaching a Pony to Stay

Dr. Weiss, when I am doing something in the yard and ignoring him, my one-year-old pony will follow me around—but when I want or need to get close to him, he will run away from me. Is there any way I can keep him near me without roping him?

- M. Davis

What a great example of how we use our bodies to better communicate with our horses! Your pony follows you around when your back is turned to him, which is exactly what he would do with others in a herd. When you face him, he moves away—which, in equine etiquette, is perfect manners!

Let’s teach him to better understand those silly two-legged horses he lives with now! Begin by keeping some yummy treats in your pocket. Instead of facing him, turn to the side, or even turn your back to him. Give a verbal cue to come toward you (“move up,” “here,” or even just his name) and wait. When he approaches, give him a treat, walk away and repeat. If he just follows along, watch what happens when you face him and back up instead; he probably will stop and wait for you to turn. After a few sessions, he likely will approach on the verbal cue.
