Neighbor's Horse Cries

Dr. Weiss, our neighbors recently acquired a horse. During the night (and also sometimes during the day) he makes that horse sound as if he were calling someone. It breaks my heart. Could the horse be lonely? He seems to be well cared for, the owners being very nice people. They also own three sheep, chickens and other fowl. Could the horse be cold? I don't know that he has a covered area for shelter.

I would like some ideas as to why he makes this crying sound so I can diplomatically make suggestions to my neighbors. Thank you in advance for your consideration of my questions.

Horses vocalize for a variety of reasons, Kathleen. A long neigh that can be heard long distances is usually a vocalization used to call others in the herd (or a human companion). It is possible that there is another horse within this horse’s visual or auditory range with whom he is communicating.

Since horses are herd animals, I always strongly suggest that horses have companions—ideally, horse companions—but in a crunch, a goat, sheep, or other farm-friendly pal can be a good social outlet.
