Mares Backing Up With Tails Raised

Today I noticed my two mares backing up to each other with their tails raised. What does this mean?

Without seeing their ears, mouth and some other features, I can only make a guess, Dianne—but the two most likely scenarios are:

  • Both mares are in season and behaving in a pre-copulatory manner.
  • The mares are each protecting a resource and are defending that resource from one another.

In the latter case, they would have their ears back, their nostrils would be long and crinkled, and their tails would be swishing back and forth heartily.
