Lying Down

What’s wrong with a horse if he lies on his side? From what I hear, this is not healthy.

Teresa, there is nothing wrong with a horse lying on his side for short periods of time. You will often see horses sunning themselves this way. A horse’s digestive system works much differently than ours, and the horse must be upright to digest properly, which is why you will not often see horses lying on their sides for long periods—but short stints of lying down are perfectly okay.
