Investigators in Kings County, California, confiscated 12 Pit Bull Terriers at the home of a local prison employee. According to ABC, Meshelle Lindsey was part of a large dog fighting ring.

Animal welfare workers first took interest in Lindsey's home after receiving complaints that he did not have enough shelter to care for two of the dogs he owned. However, this past week, investigators visited his home and found evidence that suggested he was using the dogs in an illegal fighting operation.

Kings County Sheriff Chris Jordan told the news source that Lindsey had "an unusual amount" of medical supplies for treating wounded animals, as well as materials and books about dog fighting. The investigators also found a photograph that depicted the Pit Bulls fighting.

The dogs are currently being cared for at a local animal shelter, but will likely be taken to a non-profit organization based in Fresno, California, that specializes in caring for abused or abandoned Pit Bulls.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates that there are tens of thousands of people involved in illegal dog fighting in the U.S.
