A man from Charlotte, Michigan, who was accused of dragging a dog alongside his moving car, was charged with animal cruelty and reckless driving, according to the Lansing State Journal.

The incident took place on August 15, and several members of the community observed the man dragging the dog down the street while he drove his SUV. Two vehicles forced him to stop driving and the dog was taken to a local veterinary clinic.

No owners showed up to claim the five-year-old Rottweiler mix, though one of the individuals who helped the canine after the incident later adopted the animal. The dog sustained severe injuries to his paws, but is currently in recovery.

Authorities did not arrest the man after the incident, but did take him into custody later that evening when he was pulled over on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. The offender was later charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty.

According to the American Association for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, anyone who believes they've witnessed animal abuse should report the incident to local authorities as soon as possible.
