Police officers in Estancia, New Mexico, discovered a case of animal hoarding when they were making a mental health check on veteran Raymond Karbel on September 1st. Their investigation of the premises took hours, according to Koat.com.
"It's not one or two dogs being abused," Sergeant Andy Baldridge told the news source. "We're talking two dozen dogs, plus cats and maybe other animals."
Karbel had collected 22 dogs as well as birds and rats on his property. There were also dozens of cats living within the walls of the house. It seems that the veteran is battling mental health issues and has abused animals in the past.
Officials have said that they fear they may have to put some of the animals in the house down because they are infected with parvovirus.
The ASPCA recommends that individuals who suspect a friend or family member of hoarding animals should call the local authorities. Hoarding poses a threat to the well-being of pet owners as well as pets. Disease easily spreads through dense animal populations in unsanitary areas and hoarders often have a difficult time properly caring for their pets.
