A German Shepherd known as Sarge survived a harrowing experience after being locked in a cage and shot at several times by his owner and another man. According to the Associated Press, the Ohio canine is now being sent to Best Friends Animal Society, an animal rescue group that rose to national prominence by taking in more than 20 dogs rescued from Michael Vick2019;s dog fighting operation in 2007.

Sarge will be relocated to the no-kill sanctuary in southern Utah, which currently houses around 1,700 other animals in need.

Michael Vick, now a quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, was convicted of conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture and served 19 months in prison (and another four under house arrest) for his crimes.

Unfortunately, Sarge is not eligible for adoption after the abused dog attempted to bite two care workers in Toledo, Ohio. However, Best Friends will ensure that Sarge can live a healthy life away from his abusers.

Those who witness animal abuse can help authorities and animal advocates by reporting any incidents to local police, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
