Authorities in Decatur County, Georgia, have noted a spike in cases of animal cruelty, but it has been difficult to obtain enough evidence to convict perpetrators, according to Walb.com.
The news source reports that the latest incident was on August 30th, when a Chihuahua was shot and killed. The previous Wednesday, five German Shepherds were poisoned to death.
"It's a shame. It's a disgrace to our community that it's going on," Victor Strickland, the pet parent of the German Shepherds, told the news provider.
Unfortunately, it seems that the perpetrators of these crimes are hard to track down and even harder to convict. Investigator Jason Williams explained that unless there is a direct witness or an item left at the scene, there is often little evidence to tie a person to the crime.
Williams told the news provider that it's important for anyone with information about cases of animal cruelty to speak out for the pets, because "the one witness you have can't talk."
The ASPCA suggests that those who witness animal cruelty should contact the authorities and try to obtain a piece of evidence, such as a photograph, which can help bring the offender to justice.
