Growing concern about poor conditions on PMU ranches in the mid-1990s led to the adoption of an industry-enforced Code of Practice for the care of the horses, and better breeding programs. Still, many foals born to production mares end up at slaughterhouses.
One way you can help PMU mares and foals is to support the ASPCA Equine Fund. If you can provide a good home for one or more of them, please consider adopting.
The following horse-rescue organizations are listed alphabetically:
The Animali Farm
Dreamchaser PMU Rescue and Rehabilitation
New York Horse Rescue
The Responsible Animal Care Society (TRACS)
United Pegasus Foundation
Note: There are many other organizations involved in placing PMU horses. The ASPCA has not fully evaluated those listed and can make no guarantees of any kind. Potential adopters are advised to read all materials carefully, ask questions, check independent references, and proceed with caution.
