The REAL Scary Truth about Black Cats

Wednesday, October 24, 2012 - 11:15am

Have you heard the myth that black cats are unsafe in October, in part because witches may try to adopt them for rituals? We sure have. But guess what? Top ASPCA experts agree that it’s just not true.

At the ASPCA, we LOVE black kitties. (Some of our friendliest cats, like Marissa, are black—yet Marissa has waited more than nine months to find a family. What’s up with that?)

Aside from the most important reason to adopt black kitties—that they really need extra help finding homes—here are a few reasons to take home one or two:

  • Their fur won’t show on your little black dress.
  • You can tell your kids you adopted a mini panther.
  • Black cats go with everything.
  • In most cultures, black cats are a sign of good luck.
  • You already know black cats are awesome—you have one at home! If you’ve got a great black kitty, tell us about him or her in the comments. You just might persuade someone else to give these felines a little extra attention.

I have a beautiful, sweet, loving black cat! She has been with me for 7 years and loves to kill the bugs in my house for me! She always meets me at the door when I come home and cozier up at night with me when I go to sleep. Whenever something is wrong or I don't feel well she knows and stays by my side! I love my little black cat!

I have a female blk kitten that was dropped off at my house. You could feel her backbone, she was so thin. My dogs cornered her in the pole shed and I had to put gloves on to catch her. All I saw was teeth and claws, she was so scared. I named her Love. She is the sweetest cat, but she will only let me pick her up and love her. She hides from strangers. She loves the dogs that cornered her now and runs with them morning and night to their kennels. Love has made a special place in my home and my heart.

My black cat is amazing. We found him outside and brought him in. The greatest cat I ever had. He's the most loving and affection cat ever. We call him lucky cause how everyone is says they're bad luck, but he's not he's lucky, he found a family that loves him day in and out. He's so smart its like having a baby. Lol

I have a black boy and a tabby girl, they're brother and sister and adorabe. they're both very smart and affectionate but the black boy is MUCH more playful than his sister. we have even taught him to play fetch whilst his sister will just sit and watch.

He loves a cuddle, sometimes too much as he gets jealous when i "stroke" my ipad when typing on it.

My daughter begged me to adopt this black cat..she was homeless and well living on the streets...I already have an all white cat I told her she said please momma. So I gave in and we took her on home...Her name is Nala she is 2 years old and you would swear she was a dog...You can't say here kitty kitty. YOu have to call her by her name. She plays fetch with paper balls...If you ball up a piece of paper she is right there in front of you. She is 16 pounds and I love her with all I am...She Def has made an impact in this family! We all Love her so much!

I've had many black cats over the years and they have all been wonderful and full of personality. I currently have one little black kitty named Sunshine but I usually call her Sunny. She is the sweetest little love bug, she's kind of shy around other people but she is a darling girl. I wouldn't hesitate to get another black cat when I no longer have a full house:)

I have (2) black cats-Philla & Phoebe. I found them several years ago as kittens abandoned in a wooded area-hungry & frightened. I managed to catch them (after feeding them on the side of the road)and took them home. I was unable to find a home for them, and knowing their chances of getting adopted, I kept them as my pets. They are beautiful animals, shiny black coats and striking yellow eyes and are the same as any domestic short hair. Don't allow ancient superstitions to effect your decision on adopting-black is beautiful!

I have loved black cats all my life. Kali my current black cat, and is my protector. She came to us in a semi feral state and was a grumpy girl, until she was treated repeatedly with love and kindness and settled in. Now she tucks me in at night, literally pulling the covers around my shoulders and then snuggling there to protect me. If I am upset she is in my lap comforting me. I am blessed to have her. I have always thought that blackies have a better nature that most cats, though I have a tortie and a long hair too.

I got my black cat as a ferrel 8 week old from a woodpile. She was a little ball of hiss when she came to us and turned into the most loving little baby. She sleeps with me everynight. I am convinced that the woodpile was magic!

We have had 2 black cats. They were loving and smart and funny. If we ever get any more cats it will definitely be a black one...or 2. My daughters are allergic to dogs and cats so I am hoping they will one day grow out of that because I miss my cats :( Fee and Fattie lived till they were 15 and Anna lived till she was 19 1/2.
