Paralyzed Pup Gets a Second Chance at Life

Thursday, April 17, 2014 - 1:30pm

At four years old, Taco seems like any other dog. He plays with toys, snuggles in bed, and runs around with fellow pups. But if you look closely, you’ll notice that Taco isn’t like most other dogs. He has a limp, a drag in his step that serves as a reminder of all he has been through.

You see, Taco’s life wasn’t always toys and blankets. Last year, his neck and spine were broken when he was thrown from a moving car. By the time he made it to the ASPCA Animal Hospital, he was paralyzed.

Doctors at our hospital moved into action quickly, only to discover that much of the damage to Taco’s vertebrae was inoperable. Determined to help the 10-pound pup, they began a regimen of intensive care that involved painkillers and a full-body brace—keeping him safe and comfortable until he was strong enough to begin physical therapy.

During his stay at the hospital, Taco received love, attention, and unwavering care, possibly for the first time in his life. Slowly but surely, he regained his mobility. When he was ready, he transferred to our Adoption Center and was quickly adopted into a loving home. Though Taco will always have a limp, his new family tells us that “he is full of energy and life, and he never lets his gait hinder his stride.”

When you donate to the ASPCA, you are supporting the anti-cruelty work, medical expertise, and adoption services that make us national leaders in animal welfare. Without these things, Taco might not have survived.

We believe that one day, animal cruelty—like Taco’s trauma—will be a distant memory. But until then, we need your support to keep saving lives. Please make a gift today.

The biggest satisfaction is that this little guy survived and is thriving, even with his injuries. Kudos to everyone involved with his rescue and rehabilitation.

The number two satisfaction is that the number two responsible for willingly causing this innocent creature's pain will get a big, karmic bite in the a$$...THEN s/he'll go to hell and hit pavement (etc.) for eternity.

What a beautiful baby. When will people stop seeing animals as objects?
Ending animal ag (cafo's first and foremost) would SURE help.

I look forward to the day all animal lovers love all animals. Then and only then is a complete culture of compassion in sight.

I totally agree. Anyone who hurt, abuse, mistreat, harm, might as well, prepare your fate because it's coming back double if not triple fold.

Beverly German

I agree. Shame on anyone that harms an innocent animal. It is despicable and Dresia - you are correct, "Karma is real!" Breaks my heart when I see someone mistreat any of God's blessings to our world. :) Yay for Taco!

Kevin

Those people who threw Taco out f the car are darn lucky I didn't see it. Maybe I'm lucky too, because if I had seen it I likely would be doing life in the penitentiary right now.

Michael

I would be right there with you that is if they could ever find the body

Inna

Right with you, guys! We all would have been in jail but I do not care. That is why I just donate money but do not volunteer at SPCA beacause I would have been charged with man slaughter.

Randy

Same but I would have shot him/her in their leg have them crawl to hell.

Chris

You got that Right!!!!
I second that and I would be right there with all of you. It is a disgrace how someone can just do this. This person should be thrown from a moving car so they could feel the pain this beautiful helpless dog has been going through. I hope who ever it was has a miserable life and Goes Right To Hell

Chris ,
You are right they should be thrown from a moving car! I saw a person yank on a dog collar and flip the dog over and a passerby and the owner thought it was funny . I yelled out what's so funny about that maybe you should put the collar around your neck and be flipped like that Boy, did they stop laughing. God Bless Taco survived and I hope the person who did this gets caught and someone does this to him what he did to this cute dog! Thank you ASPCA for your care to this dog!
